“I always knew I would be playing music for a living”
Tensheds
Unlike many guitar wielding dandies Matt Millership of London based Trensheds has a rather refined musical background. Matt started playing piano at the age of 6 and studied classical music, mainly piano performance at the Royal Scottish Academy.
“I always knew I would be playing music for a living”. After the Scottish Academy Matt spread his wings with a few bands but in the end decided to go it alone. As a matter of course he learnt guitar and harmonica and began penning the tracks of his first EP, ‘Ten Pages’. Not wanting to use his own name as an artist Matt explained that Tensheds was actually the nickname of a friend which seemed to suit his music.
‘Tenpages’ was recorded in late 2004; the release had a staggering 10 tracks which were recorded in a breathtaking…3 nights! Then came ‘Clockwork’ a collection of 15 tracks ranging from love songs to political protest. Bang up to date in 2007 Matt was awarded the PRS Foundation Unsigned Award for New Music. The award gave Matt access to 4 days in a professional recording studio where he cut his second EP. Now completed the EP ‘Save the Album’ is available nationwide in Fopp stores. Late last month music haunt Dingwalls hosted the EP launch which featured Matt’s backing band, a rabble of Tenshedheads and apparently some Radio1 VIPS which will remain nameless. Later that week their tour bus hit the road again taking the crew north for a gig at the Robin 2 supporting 80’s pop god Paul Young and Los Pacaminos. Catch him if you can at a rolling list of gigs that stretch well into the summer.

"Finest up and coming live musical talent"
Barfly Review
This tattered old venue doesn’t give a fiddle what you think about its interior, because the Camden Barfly does a stellar job at bringing you some of London’s – and the world’s finest up and coming live musical talent. As part of the National Barfly chain this venue hosts hot, live music 7 nights a week, 12 months a year. Utilitarian in the extreme the downstairs bar has a row of seating and a curved wooden bench for perching between dance-offs. Upstairs is where the live action happens and this average but ample stage has hosted many acts that have gone on to become household names; Coldplay, Blur, Oasis and the Strokes to name a few. After the live sets, the venue kicks off into some notable club nights. Casino Royale is held one Saturday each month and will happily mix 60s garage, psychedelia and modern fare. Better yet, ‘Kill Em All Let God Sort It Out’ (every other Saturday) and the gloriously named ‘Adventures in the Beetroot Field’ (first Friday of the month) are tagged as two of Londons best Indie mash-up nights.

The Bad Robots
play the Camden Crawl
Bad Robots have a good few things to look forward to in the next few months. First up is the legendary, distinguished HRH, the Camden Crawl. The band will be courting the queen of all gigs on the 18th and 19th of April, in one of the 25 venues the event will (literally) be staggered over. Another coup is their inclusion in the line-up for the Brighton Great Escape Festival from the 15th May. Although a slightly purer location than Camden, I’m utterly confident their brand of ‘Cancer Rock’ will go down just as nice.

Lazing by the Swimming Pool
A Kojo song on the soundtrack of "The Graduates"
Kojo are to have their catchy track, “Lazing by the Swimming Pool” used in the soundtrack of a movie called “The Graduates”. Due to be released in the States this June, this racy film in the vein of “American Pie” sees four friends head out to Ocean City, Maryland to celebrate their high school graduation.
Regardless if this film is a hit, Kojo’s contribution is worthy of spilling out of the speakers whilst soaking up those summer rays.

Bass Linear
by The Humanity
The Humanity’s single release of ‘Bass Linear’ walks the hallowed path of electro - rock originally beaten down by the likes of New Order, and it walks with panache.
The static synth opening is a most euphoric listen right through to the guts of the song where vocals and guitar lock in a sonic riot. Don’t forget to pick up The Humanity’s t-shirt, for sale at a modest £8; a compliment to a great song!
