Alive and
full
of music

Ludwig Amadeus
We caught up with Ludwig Amadeus last week in London’s Brick Lane and got the low down over some mint tea. Unlike his namesake, this young artist is very much alive and full of music. German-born Ludwig was raised in the UK where he works as an electrical engineer by day and burns the midnight oil producing music. Talking about his day job and his music he drew some parallels between the two: ‘I think they are quite alike, in both it’s about getting the different parts to fit’. Formerly Ludwig collaborated with a guitarist friend but took the decision last year to go it alone. Considering that all his songs are written, recorded and produced on about £100 worth of equipment he now finds the solo experience an easier and more enjoyable process. ‘I spend a lot of time making each track, I strive to get the best quality recording’. They say that creative success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration; in this case Ludwig is well on his way. He recently achieved Best Songs on the Amazing Tunes site and on 25th February his new single, Happy Ending, will be released for download. You can catch him playing a few nights with pop outfit The Telegrams at Leonards in Clerkenwell on 9th February and Babalou in Brixton on 13th. While 2008 seems to be rolling along quite nicely for this 19-year old he’s leaving nothing to chance and is currently in talks with a new producer who recently notched up 4 top-40 hits.

Smallest Venue
12 Bar Review
12 Bar Club can only be described as small and perfectly formed, because despite its dimensions, it remains a mainstay of good live music in London. Located in a building built in 1635 the club began life as a stables, it was later converted, and used as a forge up until World War I. It then became a carpenter’s shop and later store rooms. In the 80’s it was renovated to house ‘The Forge Folk & Blues Club’, a social club for the staff of the guitar centre next door. Soon word spread and it became a popular haunt for musos. In 1994 the venue expanded and became the 12 Bar Club. Since then, the bar area has grown, new offices and a restaurant were added to the front and a new kitchen installed below. It’s still one of the capital’s smallest venues but the music is non-stop; showcasing around four acts a night, 7 nights a week, from solo performers through to largescale bands. The emphasis is always on songwriting and the venue hosts artists from all over the world. Located close to the intersection of Charing Cross Road, Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road practically every person in London can get to this place but as there’s limited standing room I’d get there early.

Return of The Furies
The music universe, as every universe, is governed by the fundamental principles of the beginning and the end. A band splits up or goes its separate ways, another is created. Jess, Nic and Eleanor are no longer part of the Return of the Furies and have sailed off to form November Fleet. The Furies are still fronted by Mercedes Diett and in a cosmic like twist the new line up features Jo McDonald on guitar, Kat Bax on bass and Sarah Ellis on drums: yes, they are the original four members who formed the band, that leaves us right back at the beginning…great stuff.
