Live raw and powerful
Lyla D'Souza
Lyla D’Souza launched her career after seeing U2 play in her homeland, Australia. Over the past eight years she has performed as a rock/soul singer-songwriter across the UK, Europe and Australia. Not new to the business she has already successfully recorded and released her first 4 –track EP entitled ‘Loose Cannons’.
With success looming she has resisted pressure to commercialise her own sound through the use of pitch correction systems like Auto-Tune. Lyla believes the growing use of filters - which correct a singer’s natural intonation - means there are fewer distinctive voices.
She defines her sound as live, raw and powerful and wants to bring rock in the American-Australian style to UK audiences where she feels the live circuit is centred on indie guy bands. As well as touring with her group she performs on the corporate functions circuit. Her two most popular requests are ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive’, alas ACDC’s ‘You shook me all night long’, a favourite of hers, doesn’t get many requests. Lyla can only be described as a true musician and with 150 gigs under her belt this year, this novel female rock act will be difficult to miss. Exciting plans for 2008 involve an Australian tour and a new programme of work with her publicist, stylist and photographer to push her unique female rock sound. www.myspace.com/lyladsouza

Multitasking venue, Cargo, is hard at work for another year bringing the public its brilliant mix of music, food and booze. Located on Rivington Street just off Shoreditch High Street, the venue fills out a disused railway arch and maintains an urban décor of stripped brick, wood and leather.
Through a set of large glass doors is the street food café, special offers can often be found on their web-site and a menu shake-up for 2008 brings tapas to the table. Food is served from midday to late making it the perfect pre-club pit-stop. Further back is a bar and lounge area with triple height brick archway, padded leather booths and wooden bench style seating. Behind this is a large club/live music venue and when opened at night the entire space has a capacity of 500, allowing clubbers to move between bar, lounge and club depending on their mood.
True to form 2008’s first week kicked off with a free gig featuring Utah Saints on the 4th and Giles Peterson’s very own awards bash on the 5th. Cargo also Celebrates its 7th birthday on 23rd of January with free entry. Partygoers can enjoy free drinks and live performances from electro punk outfit Does it offend you, yeah? and experimental soul artist Tawiah. Claire Quinn

Perfectly Flawed
Fashion designer Karl Slater certainly is a man on a mission. Not content with completing a grueling fashion degree at Reading University Karl chose to undertake additional modules in textiles and footwear. Soon after graduation he joined H&M as an assistant manager in a bid to understand the commercial front end of high street fashion. Nine months on he moved straight into the role of footwear designer with a company called Ascot, taking H&M’s core values with him – constant improvement, maintaining a fast paced environment and a belief in people. His new design role took him to China as he managed sample production and then on to Italian trade shows. One year on Karl stepped up a career level by joining a company called Hey Trends producing designs for high street giants such as Topshop, Miss Selfridge and Primark. In 2006 the Festival of Youth Arts spotted real talent and commissioned 8 pieces for their annual show. While most mortals would settle for such resounding success Karl Slater had already planned the launch of his own label: Perfectly flawed. The label creates fantastic, design rich garments taking inspiration from London life, dance, art and fashion. All designs are limited to 100 per colour, making each one a collector’s piece. The end of 2007 saw Perfectly Flawed showing their work at the illustrious East London Design Show and so far this year Karl has set up a new Blog to help us keep abreast of his meteoric rise.

Deadline Midnight
Saturday 19th
Daniel Rachel’s single ‘Let it Be Mine’ is making clear headway in its push up the charts. Over 1,000 supporters had pledged to buy the single prior to its release on Monday 14th, in aid of Tender, a charity that works under the edict ‘domestic abuse, no excuse’. Daniel only needs to sell 1500 singles to achieve chart entry with his indie ballad and thus provide national coverage for Tender. A midweek chart place of 19 on Amazon, beating the likes of Artic Monkeys, is a very good sign. A night of music and comedy at The Borderline on Wednesday 16th sold out and was a very successful spotlight for the single and its charitable cause which strives to educate on matters of sexual violence and abuse in the home. Acts included comedian Terry Alderton, notorious for gigging with the likes of Eddie Izzard and Joan Rivers, as well as renowned blues/country singer ‘Willis’ and Daniel Rachel himself. MC Kevin Day comparing the evening. You can buy the single up ‘til midnight Saturday 19th, so go to www.youchartit.co.uk now.
