"Nambucca's
a rolling snowball"
Nambucca review
Upper Holloway Road isn’t the most intuitive place to find North London’s live music hotspot. We arrived at a normal boozer on 596 Holloway Road, when we got inside, it was still a normal London boozer but it doesn’t take long to see why it’s hosting the zeitgeist. Nambucca has a growing reputation for showcasing some of the best unsigned talent in North London and along with that comes the musos and their pretty ladies; yes some of the musos are themselves pretty ladies. As you would expect the staff have an image and attitude problem but that’s quickly surpassed by this venue’s vibe and crowd. Look at its gig list and feast your eyes on some seriously up and coming talent. Visiting the venue in late December to see a Funk band called Kojo we were treated to 3 amazing support acts; it’s obvious the promoters know what they’re doing. We got in, as directed, via the side door and bypassed the payment checkpoint because even the girls on the door were having a great time.
Nambucca’s a rolling snowball just now, it’s got the crowd the bands and an it vibe that makes the whole thing very attractive. If you can drag yourself away from the usual Shoreditch haunts for 1 night you won’t be disappointed.

"some attitude"
Kojo
London funk four- piece, Kojo, topped the bill at Nambucca as December drew to a close. Before they even graced the stage it was pretty clear we were in for some attitude. The band have a definite NERD meets George Clinton look and I caught them having a pre-gig wind-up at stageside. Their set kicks of with the unmistakably funky ‘Intergalacteletronic Music’, lead singer Chaun steps up to the crowd with his hoodie pulled low and delivers the track like a funk-crazy preacher. In the middle of their set came a change of pace with ‘8 Years Old’, this track is a nostalgic reggae influenced memory of childhood. Keeping up the pace the boys delivered the remaining tracks in quick succession and had some female members of the crowd whipped into a frenzy. It’s also clear that Kojo have been jamming as their set was effortless and tight. If you didn’t get to see them in Nambucca you wont be stuck for gig options this year; the band have a rolling set of dates until mid-March including a free gig at Oxford’s Purple Turtle on 13th January. The Big Apple
Ian Stevenson
London based artist Ian Stevenson has taken his unique style of art to the The Big Apple where his work features at the Ad Hoc gallery in an exhibition entitled ‘Behind The Seen’. The show was curated by Michael De Feo and includes work from other great artists like Blek Le Rat and Keith Haring.
His latest work is also spotlighted in a documentary on Current TV where he uses everyday discarded objects such as fridges, skips, and cardboard boxes as the canvas for a series of curious characters. Produced by ‘Institute For Eyes’ - an independent film company representing the work of directors Luke Seomore and Joseph Bull, www.instituteforeyes.co.uk - this short film features music and art by Ian.
This is all no mean feat considering that Current TV is an Emmy award-winning peer-to-peer news and information network; the only 24/7 cable/satellite television network and Internet site produced and programmed in collaboration with its audience. Simply go to http://current.com and search under Ian’s name. Claire Quinn

Nikki Aston
Feisty pop/rock diva Nikki Aston played a run of SNAP discos around the South West, in the run up to Christmas. SNAP stands for Say No And Phone. The disco nights are the brain-child of independent UK charity Crimestoppers. They provide safe dance nights for young people aged eleven to sixteen. Crimestoppers used the Christmas series of SNAP to get the message through to kids that saying no to drugs is okay, while offering them a chance to party away from the prying eyes of their parents. Nikki, whose idols include Lucie Silvas and Kelly Clarkson of American Idol fame, isn’t shy of turning in the traditional Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll image for a more family friendly approach. Her gutsy, full-blooded voice and passionate delivery appeals to all ages and SNAP discos will have broadened a fan base drawn through pub gigs and late-night concerts. Let’s hear it for the kids!
