The last time I was at Storm was seven years ago on my birthday (won’t be telling you which birthday) for a random garage night. I had never thought of it as a live music venue so I was intrigued.
The 350 capacity basement venue is home to The Talent Scout’s weekly event held every Thursday and Friday, where unsigned acts showcase their talent. As their website says, the venue really does have ‘a top quality sound and lighting system, warm atmosphere with friendly staff’. The door staff were reassuringly cool, as was the receptionist, even the audience member who told me off for conducting an interview during someone else’s performance was pretty sound! (slap wrist).
At the rear of the oblong club is the stage and seating; which is initially a quite awkward as there are two annoying pillars in front of the of leather chairs sofas that face the stage. But I guess if you’re supporting an artist, you should be on your feet, all around the stage. The bar is tucked away on the opposite side nearer the entrance which is just perfect as it’s far enough away from the stage, yet due to the cosy size of the venue you’re never too far away to miss any stage action and your beverage break won’t cause a noticeable distraction.
It’s fair to say I was sketchy about this venue, however with the right performers and a great audience, I have definitely warmed to Storm.

Mark Mathews

Mark Mathews

If I was going on a road trip wih some mates and I needed a few great tunes I would download some Mark Matthews. Originally from Maidstone in Kent Mark cut his teeth in a number of small bands from different musical genres. At the beginning of 2006 he cut ties and went solo indulging his own specific musical tastes. On his MySpace his listed influences read like a whos-who of Manchester music royalty, bands ranging from (of course) The Beatles & Oasis to The La’s & Stone Roses, dismissive of current Nouveau trends mark is a mainstay for the hedonist or those who are unlucky in love

It’s a penchant that’s clearly displayed in his own work, described as Indie Pop, both his lyrics and music follow in an acoustic guitar led path. Songs such as ‘London Lives’ have a delicate Xylophone intro leading into a toe tapping strum fest. An Artist that should definitely be seen live, Mark’s personality adds a great dimension to some infectious tracks.Mark Mathews

Highlights this year have been his nomination for the coveted Indie Music Awards, the release of his five track E.P that can be purchased through his MySpace. On September 7th he playing the XFM sponsored ‘Festival 24’ (Cardiff’s answer to the Camden Crawl) and its no rest for the wicked between now and November as he completes a string of gigs along the country. Having admitted to once playing 106 gigs in one year mark can probably also be found at one of several open mic nights around the capital, I think we can safely say hes prolific.

Rapscallion Hard to put your finger on, Rapscallion, that’s them. There’s a real wealth of musical talent and styles in this band and they waste not time in presenting you with both. After a brief period in the shadows the band have found a new drummer and are again writing and recording. Their new line up is expected to retain old favourites such as Slip Away and Come with Me Tonight while new tracks have been described as Reggae/Rootsy and Jazz/Swing, proper gallivanting if you ask me, great.
