Like many young creative people Rebecca Bartram found out early-on that she was severely Dyslexic. Instead of creating barriers to her learning it guided her straight to the creative arts. As a young woman she attended a college specialising in creative learning, that allowed her to pursue a City and Guilds in Art & Design and an A-Level in Jewellery. Next Stop was Central St Martins where she decided to specialise in Jewellery, finally gaining a BA HNS in Jewellery Design in 1998. It was during her degree at St Martins that her conceptual approach to design was developed. At the end of her 1st year she encountered Robert Baines, a lecturer and designer from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. Soon after, Rebecca travelled to RMIT and spent a term as an exchange student, honing a technical aspect to her work. Studies in London had given her a strong eye for design and experiences in Melbourne introduced more technical aspects; what she called ‘the making of things’. At present her work is infused with the idea of ‘preciousness’; Perspex and wood often envelop silver, in others precious stones are concealed in rings. Whilst her jewellery is sold in Moscow, London and Malmo her heart lies with commissioned work and she aims to expand this aspect of her business. In doing so, Rebecca will be able to work alongside her clients producing one-off pieces which last for a lifetime, designed in response to their needs. www.rebeccabartram.com
