Lyla D’Souza launched her career after seeing U2 play in her homeland, Australia. Over the past eight years she has performed as a rock/soul singer-songwriter across the UK, Europe and Australia. In November Lyla signed a publishing contract with Sony BMG and recorded her first 4 –track EP entitled ‘Loose Cannons’.
With success looming she has resisted pressure to commercialise her own sound through the use of pitch correction systems like Auto-Tune. Lyla believes the growing use of filters - which corrects a singer’s natural intonation - means there are fewer distinctive voices.
She defines her sound as live, raw and powerful and wants to bring rock in the American-Australian style to UK audiences where she feels the live circuit is centred on indie guy bands. As well as touring with her group she performs on the corporate functions circuit. Her two most popular requests are ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive’, alas ACDC’s ‘You shook me all night long’, a favourite of hers, doesn’t get many requests. Lyla can only be described as a true musician and with 150 gigs under her belt this year, this novel female rock act will be difficult to miss. Exciting plans for 2008 involve an Australian tour and a new programme of work with her publicist, stylist and photographer to push her unique female rock sound.
